The Foreign and Commonwealth Office are advising British Nationals who are visiting Thailand to behave respectfully following the death of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej after 70 years as head of state.

From today (14 October 2016) Thailand will be in an official period of mourning for one year. You should respect the feelings and sensitivities of the Thai people during this time.

The FCO go on to state that access to entertainment, including restaurants, bars and shopping areas may be restricted and you should behave respectfully when in public areas.  You should wear sombre and respectful clothing when in public, check local media regularly and follow the advice of local authorities.

In addition to the period of mourning, British Nationals in Thailand should be aware that there remains an increased security presence in some resorts after multiple explosions in tourist areas across Thailand in August.

The FCO also continues to advise against all but essential travel to the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla on the Thai-Malaysia border.
