Medical questions answered

  • Is private medical treatment covered abroad?
  • You should be aware that travel Insurance is not private medical insurance, in that it only covers unavoidable, unexpected emergency treatment. You are not covered for private medical treatment if there are medically capable public facilities available.

If you become unwell, or sustain a minor injury whilst abroad, you must call our 24/7 assistance team so that they can help you find appropriate treatment locally.

However, you should call the local emergency services immediately, 112 in Europe, 911 in the USA and Canada or the local equivalent to 999, if you have any symptoms that might require emergency treatment including, but not limited to, difficulty breathing, chest pain, seizure (fit) activity, decreased level of consciousness, heavy bleeding, sudden swelling of the face and lips, signs of a stroke or any other life-threatening condition. You must, in all cases call our 24/7 assistance team to authorise cover. Failure to do so may invalidate your claim.

  • What do you define as a pre-existing medical condition?
  • If the answer to any part of the following question is "yes", then there is a pre-existing medical condition and you must declare the relevant condition(s) when purchasing your travel insurance:

Have you or anyone in your party
    1. been prescribed medication, or received treatment or attended a medical practitioner's surgery in the last 2 years
    2. attended a hospital or clinic as an out-patient or in-patient in the last two years
    3. been currently put on a waiting list for treatment or investigation
    4. been diagnosed by a medical practitioner as suffering from a terminal illness
    5. ever had any stress, anxiety, depression, or psychiatric condition such as eating disorders, drug or alcohol abuse or mental illness for which you have been treated or diagnosed.

  • What if I or my travelling companions have pre-existing medical conditions?
  • Goodtogoinsurance.com is designed to offer cover to people with medical conditions and their travelling companions. You will be asked a series of health questions, which enable you declare your medical conditions quickly and easily. In most cases we will be able to provide a quotation to cover your conditions.
It is important that you declare all of your existing medical conditions and answer the questions honestly and accurately. If you don't declare all of your conditions any claims that you make may not be paid in full, or could be declined completely.
If you are travelling with friends or family and one of you suffers from pre-existing medical conditions it pays to be covered on the same travel insurance policy.
When the whole party is covered on the same policy, they will all, including those without medical conditions, have cover in place if the holiday has to be cancelled due to another travellers pre-existing medical condition - so long as that condition was declared at time of purchase.

  • What conditions will you cover?
  • For single trip policies, all types of condition can be covered up to a very high level of severity. For annual multi-trip policies we can cover a more limited degree of severity.
  • What about mental health conditions?
  • These are equally as insurable with goodtogoinsurance.com as "physical" ones - from mild depression through to bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
  • I have a close relative in UK with a potentially serious medical condition. He's not travelling but if he became seriously ill or died, I'd want to cancel or curtail my trip. Am I covered?
  • We cannot medically screen someone who is not applying for insurance. So the way we deal with this issue is that you will be covered if your relative's doctor is prepared to state that at the time insurance was taken out, he/she would not have foreseen such a serious deterioration in his or her patient's condition.
  • Can you quote if my condition has not yet been diagnosed?
  • We can only cover conditions which have been diagnosed by a medical practitioner.  If you do have an undiagnosed condition please call us on 0330 024 9949, we can refer your details to the underwriter and they may be able to provide cover for everything else, but excluding the undiagnosed condition.
  • I am on medication to control my condition and therefore no longer have symptoms. Do I still need to declare this condition?
  • Yes, all medical conditions must be declared even if they are controlled by medication.
  • I'm on a waiting list for an operation, can you provide cover?
  • Yes. We can provide cover if you are on a waiting list for an operation or treatment for a diagnosed condition. For full details please read our information about travel insurance if you are on a waiting list.
  • I use a wheelchair. Is it covered?
  • Mobility aids such as wheelchairs are covered for loss or damage up to £2,500, on our Silver, Gold and Platinum policies, providing you own them. What's more, we''ll pay for hire of another one whilst yours is out of action during your trip.
  • How do you calculate my quotation?
  • The premiums vary according to a combination of factors (mainly age, type and severity of condition, destination and duration of trip).
  • Are there any important policy conditions regarding health?
    1. You must be fit to undertake your planned trip
    2. You must not travel against medical advice or with the intention of obtaining medical treatment or consultation abroad
    3. We will cover you only for pre-existing medical conditions that you have declared to us and which we have accepted in writing. These are set out in the policy document pack, along with the answers you gave to our medical questions.
    4. We will not cover you if your state of health was worse than you told us at the time you purchased your policy.
  • What if I'm pregnant?
  • Travelling When Pregnant

We provide cover under this policy if something unexpected happens. In particular, we provide cover under the Emergency Medical and Repatriation Expenses section for accidental bodily injury or illness. We don’t consider pregnancy or childbirth to be an illness or accidental bodily injury.

To be clear, we only provide cover for Cancellation, Curtailment and Emergency Medical and Repatriation Expenses for claims that come from Complications of Pregnancy and Childbirth.

Complications of pregnancy and childbirth only includes the following:

Toxaemia (toxins in the blood), Bicornuate uterus, Gestational diabetes (diabetes arising as a result of pregnancy), Gestational hypertension (high blood pressure arising as a result of pregnancy), Pre-eclampsia (where you develop high blood pressure, carry abnormal fluid and have protein in your urine during the second half of  pregnancy), Ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that develops outside of the uterus), Foetal Growth Retardation due to Placental Insufficiency, Molar pregnancy or hydatidiform mole (a pregnancy in which a tumour develops from the placental tissue), Post-partum haemorrhage (excessive bleeding following childbirth), Retained placenta membrane (part or all of the placenta is left behind in the uterus after delivery), Placental abruption (part or all of the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus), Hyperemesis gravidarum (excessive vomiting as a result of pregnancy), Obstetric cholestasis, Placenta praevia (when the placenta is in the lower part of the uterus and covers part or all of the cervix), Stillbirth, Miscarriage, Emergency Caesarean section, A termination needed for medical reasons, or Premature birth more than 8 weeks (or 16 weeks if you know you are having more than one baby) before the expected delivery date.

We will not cover denial of boarding by your carrier, so you should check that you will be able to travel with the carrier/airline in advance. If at the time of booking your trip you are aware that you are pregnant, you must ensure that you are able to have the recommended vaccinations and inoculations by the UK government for that trip; no cover will be provided for cancellation in the event that, after booking you discover travel is advised against, or you are unable to receive the appropriate and recommended vaccinations and inoculations for that country.

Please make sure your Medical Practitioner and Midwife are aware of your travel plans, and that there are no known complications, and you are fit to undertake the planned trip.

  • Will I be covered if my tour operator or airline goes bust?
  • If you're booked on a package tour through a travel agent or tour operator, very often the travel agent or tour operator''s bond with ABTA or the ATOL will pay out.
  • What regions/countries does your travel insurance cover?
  • Our policies can cover anywhere world-wide, provided the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is not advising against all, or all but essential travel. Premiums vary according to your chosen destination.

NB. We recommend that you check the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office's travel advice before travelling. Your policy will not cover you at all if you travel to a country against Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice.
  • Does goodtogoinsurance.com cover terrorist attacks?
  • If you travel to a country or area which the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against visiting, you are not covered at all. If you''re not sure what the FCDO's current attitude to your destination is, please ring them on 020 7008 5000 or visit their website, https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice

Apart from travel to these "non-recommended" countries, medical expenses and personal possessions are covered against terrorist attacks, but cancellation claims are not, unless you buy our additional terrorism cover. If your destination has recently become more dangerous your tour operator will usually agree to you switching your booking elsewhere.

  • Cancellation of Package Holiday Arrangements: If you booked via a travel agent or tour operator or have booked more than one element including a flight from the same provider, then the trip is considered as packaged and package travel regulations apply. You should contact your travel provider about a obtaining a refund or an alternative trip.

Cancellation of Flights and Air Passenger Rights: Flight cancellations by the airline need to be claimed directly from them and are not covered by travel insurance. Flight companies are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority. If your flight operator cancels or can’t fulfil your flight then there is protection available under something called the ‘Montreal Convention’. All around the world, passenger rights for international flights are protected under the Montreal Convention. Essentially, this piece of law states that the airline is responsible for you if your flight is cancelled and/or you are left stranded at an airport waiting for a flight. These measures of care include: Meals and refreshments, Communication to the outside world (two occasions), Hotel accommodations when necessary, Rerouting to your final destination. In countries like Canada, Israel and the Member States of the European Union, your rights are protected even further. Like any piece of law, it is complicated and not that easy to read! But below is a link and if you google CAA and Montreal Convention then you will find some useful information online that may help you. https://www.caa.co.uk/Passengers/Resolving-travel-problems/How-the-CAA-can-help/Consumer-protection-law/
