Foreign office warns of attacks in Algarve

The death of a tourist in the popular resort of Albufeira has been followed by a Foreign Office warning to holidaymakers of the danger of violent attacks in the Algarve. Two men have been attacked in the Montechoro neighbourhood by a gang, one of these attacks sadly resulting in the death of Mr Haggarth who died in hospital last Wednesday.

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for the Algarve to warn that street crime in the region can occasionally turn violent. A spokesman for the Foreign Office has said that the change in advice is ‘very minor’ and aimed to alert holidaymakers about street crime in the area.

We hope that your visit abroad is trouble free and that you have an enjoyable trip. If you do become a victim of theft or assault consular staff should be able to help you by offering assistance and advice. Check the Foreign Office website for the contact details you might need when travelling abroad. The FCO website also contains some useful information on staying safe when abroad along with the latest travel advice and alerts.

If you are planning a holiday or trip abroad don’t forget to buy travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday. Most policies will provide cover for medical expenses, personal possessions and legal expenses.
