A resort in Mexico is striving to become the most eco-friendly resort in the world by encouraging all staff and patrons to be environmentally aware.

The Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa is on the stunning Riviera Maya, right near a beautiful white sand beach. The resort offers eco-friendly activities and they recycle as much rubbish as they can. They also use biodegradable bottles throughout the hotel and recycled paper for all printed documents.

By using alternative energy and maximising on solar power, the resort has managed to reduce their carbon footprint by 75%.

Their ’Extinguish the Light, Ignite the Life’ campaign encourages all guests to be environmentally aware by turning off lights and air conditioning units when they’re not needed. They also suggest the use of biodegradable sunscreen.

At no extra charge they offer an Eco Tour that takes in the surrounding mangroves and its wildlife. The aim of the tour is to outline the importance of preserving the eco-system in the area.

Climate change is still a big issue to many travellers, and people want to know that they can travel abroad and stay somewhere that adopts good eco-friendly practices.

The Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa also supports the community by asking guests to bring toys or clothes to give to local children in Playa del Carmen.

The spa hopes that other resorts in the industry will take notice of their efforts and follow suit.

If you are planning a trip to Mexico, make sure you buy travel insurance to protect your health and belongings while you are away. Also, visit your GP to find out if you need any vaccinations before you travel.
