World Diabetes Day: Travel Insurance for Diabetics

Added 14/11/2013

World Diabetes Day

Today is World Diabetes Day so we’d like to take the opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of getting the right travel insurance if you are diabetic.

World Diabetes Day is held every year on the 14 November, it is organised by the International Diabetes Federation which is an umbrella organisation of over 200 national diabetes associations, including Diabetes UK. The aim is to educate individuals and health professionals about the risks associated with diabetes and the lifestyle changes which can reduce the numbers of people developing the condition.

Being diabetic does not prevent you from going on holiday, but as being diabetic can increase your risk of developing other serious medical conditions, such as kidney failure and heart disease, it is extremely important to get the right travel insurance cover.

Declare diabetes to your travel insurance provider

To be fully covered by your travel insurance for medical expenses or cancellation due to illness you must declare that you are a diabetic to your travel insurance provider. (You should also declare any other existing medical conditions).

Declaring diabetes when you buy travel insurance is easy, it can usually be done online or over the phone. You will be asked what type of diabetes you have and then asked a series of multiple choice questions such as whether you take insulin to control your diabetes and whether you have had any hospital admissions in the last year. You won’t need to provide a note from your doctor or the names of any medication that you take.

Goodtogoinsurance.com is proud to provide travel insurance which can cover all types of diabetes and associated medical conditions. Since our launch in 2010 we have insured over 10,000 travellers with diabetes, enabling them to enjoy their holiday with the peace of mind that they have travel insurance cover in place.

We firmly believe that being diabetic should not prevent you from obtaining good value travel insurance, with your existing medical conditions fully covered.

Don’t be tempted to go away without travel insurance cover for your diabetes

If you have not declared that you have diabetes when you buy travel insurance it is unlikely to be covered. This means that you run the risk of incurring large medical bills if you do fall ill and require medical treatment whilst you are on holiday.

You would also be unable to make a claim on your travel insurance if you had to cancel your holiday due to a diabetes related illness.
