The Cabin Baggage Laptop/Tablet Ban and Your Travel Insurance

On Tuesday 21 March the UK government announced a ban on laptops and tablets in cabin baggage on flights from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

Passengers flying from these 6 countries into the UK will no longer be allowed to carry laptops, tablets and large phones in to the aircraft cabin.

The new restrictions follow a similar ban in the US which affects 8 countries.

Which devices are not allowed in the cabin?

  • large phones (larger than length: 16.0cm, width: 9.3cm, depth: 1.5cm)
  • all laptops
  • all tablets and e-readers

Which flights and routes will this apply to?

These new measures will apply on all inbound direct flights travelling to the UK from the following countries:

  • Turkey
  • Lebanon
  • Jordan
  • Egypt
  • Tunisia
  • Saudi Arabia

Passengers travelling on these flights should check online with their carrier if they require further information.

How does this laptop and gadget ban affect your travel insurance?

We are pleased to say that where electronic devices are required to be stored in hold luggage to comply with the new measures, we will cover loss or damage up to the policy limits and subject to all other policy terms and conditions.

Laptops are covered up to £500 within the personal property section of your policy (Gold and Platinum policies only) and tablets, e-readers and phones can be covered by our optional Gadget Cover.
 
We also recommend that you take the following precautions:

  • Make sure that your electronic devices are securely packed in your suitcase. Wrap in bubble wrap and place in the middle of your case. It is also advisable to have a good quality lock on your case.
  • Check that your electronic device is still in your baggage as soon as you collect it from baggage reclaim. If you find it’s missing or damaged, report the details to the airline in writing and request a Property Irregularity Report (PIR)
  • Keep all travel tickets and luggage tags to help support any claim
