All flights to and from Gatwick Airport cancelled till tomorrow morning
Added 01/12/2010
Last night snow continued to fall on Gatwick Airport. Workers at Gatwick Airport have found it increasingly difficult to clear the snow and ice from the runway, which is currently too icy for planes to take off and land.
Due to the treacherous wintry conditions, all flights to and from Gatwick Airport have been cancelled until 06:00 tomorrow morning. The weather forecast has indicated that more snow will fall across the country throughout Wednesday, which added to the decision to cancel the flights. Edinburgh Airport is also currently closed.
If you have a flight booked today or tomorrow morning, contact your airline directly for more details. You can also visit Gatwick Airport’s website for details. Check the website regularly to find out if there will be any further flight cancellations beyond 06:00 tomorrow.
A spokeswoman for Gatwick Airport commented: "We need to make sure the runway is safe before all flights can recommence but the snow has not stopped all night. It is vital that passengers do not make their way to the airport and check our website and with their airline for updates."
Snow on the roads around London has caused disruptions and jack-knifed lorries on major roads have led to severe delays. If you have a flight booked when Gatwick Airport reopens, make sure you allow plenty of time to get to the airport in the event of delays on the roads.
There have also been disruptions on train services in and out of London. Yesterday afternoon many services were halted, while one particular train from London Bridge broke down. Passengers spent the night in the trains’ carriages in freezing temperatures.
