Nearly half of skiers over 55 don’t check their travel insurance

According to new research by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and ABTA, nearly half (46%) of over 55s going on a winter sports holiday never check if they have taken out appropriate travel insurance for the activities they will be taking part in, including skiing and snowboarding.

Rather surprisingly the over-55s are the worst age group for checking their travel insurance with the general average coming in at 33% not checking if they have winter sports cover.

Thousands of skiers and snowboarders suffer injuries on the slopes every year, so it is very important to have the right travel insurance if you are going skiing on snowboarding: If you don’t you could find yourself with large medical bills following an accident on the slopes.

Your winter sports or ski travel insurance should provide cover for emergency medical expenses following an accident whilst skiing or snowboarding as well as piste recovery, by air ambulance if necessary.

If you are doing anything other than simply skiing or snowboarding on marked pistes check the policy details to see if the activity is covered. You may find you need to add extra cover for heli-skiing, off-piste skiing or snow parks, or those activities may be excluded altogether.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, said:

People heading off to the slopes this winter should make sure they are covered by the appropriate travel insurance. Winter sports holidays often include activities that may not be covered by the usual insurance policies, so we would advise holidaymakers to check that they are covered for everything they plan to do.

Unfortunately, accidents can happen and can lead to costly medical bills, but having appropriate insurance means people can rest assured that they are adequately covered and can make the most of their time on the slopes.
